Chapter 14 – The Eleventh Hour

The world moved on, heading toward its inevitable end.

The Grimwood would become the center of the world’s fate, a simple wilderness with a long history of bloodshed and turmoil upon the planet most of the human residents called Atheron. This forest was not a region where Transcendara tended to dwell – few had much desire to remain – there were too many orcs.

Even the human kingdom of Fortunaire had little interest except to obliterate the orcs. All in all, it had nothing to offer.

Except, in that long history of warfare, four Transcendara had learned to cultivate from the endless conflict and death ever present in this land, and cultivated power beyond that of any other Transcendara – The Eclipse Ascendants – their very name chosen for the sacrifice this world would make to raise them to a Rank of Immortality that would bypass any other god this world had ever known.

And all it required was conflict on a massive scale.

Bringing down the Ascendants had ended the strength of the orc nation. They had sacrificed winning a war to save Atheron, a sacrifice of many orc heroes – each one Divine Transcendara Rank.

The Ascendants could not be killed. Even now, they seemed incapable of being destroyed, though their freedom hinged upon vessels from another world.

Except – one had been slain – Insatius’s core no longer existed – and therefore, neither did he.

Only three remained – but even with the loss of their insatiable ally, things were still moving forward.

To the west, Gorevex’s desire for war and bloodshed infected the human realm of Fortunaire. Humans had spread far to the west, to distant shores. They did not need enemies, only borders. The conflict fed Gorevex a steady stream of Essence.

Gorevex could have been great – except his mind was now shattered. His vessel was a rotten corpse consumed by animals. What had once passed for a strategic mind now knew only rage and the desire to slay all things.

And a small hint of a memory of a goal to transcend this world.

He remained in the Grimwood, waiting, with a small army slaughtering all things in their path.

Morbusk still remembered. Disease spread so easily, even amongst the robust orcs. The spreading of disease went slow, but then spread exponentially. Plague now spread to every direction.

It was about time for the three of them to come together. He knew of the defeat of Insatius. He’d faced the heroes.

Morbusk was afraid.

* * *

The final Ascendant, Voidreth, had come into more power than she’d never known. The others had never understood that she held true power. The Essence the other three generated fed her as well. Thanks to the two remaining vessels, she’d absorbed more Essence than she’d thought capable.

She could Transcend right now. Except… she wanted it all. The death of this planet would make her a Cultivator beyond any legend of Immortality she’d ever heard. She would enter the next Stage of the unknown capable of shaking universes.
